NAR’s Code of Ethics, adopted in 1913, was one of the first codifications of ethical duties adopted by any business group. The Code ensures that consumers are served by requiring REALTORS® to cooperate with each other in furthering clients’ best interests. It is an important part of being a REALTOR®, and sets REALTORS® apart from other real estate business professionals. But there’s a lot more to it than just understanding a document or passing an exam. There are training courses, continuing education, a pledge of performance and service, and a lot more. Let’s dive in to learn a little more about this code.

REALTOR® Code of Ethics Background

As one of the first codifications of ethical duties for a business group, dating back to 1913, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics is a fundamental part of becoming a REALTOR®. It provides guidelines under which all REALTORS® must operate, ensures fair treatment of each other and in working for clients’ best interests, and is a core part of the NAR. It was adopted to unite the profession and establish high ethical standards to protect both buyers and sellers.

While working in real estate can be challenging and quite competitive, the Code helps everyone work in a manner that is honorable, with a focus on the best interest of all for the greater good. In such a demanding industry, this is incredibly important as it guides not just REALTOR® actions towards each other and their clients, but also showcases the additional level of effort that a REALTOR® must put in to be certified above and beyond other real estate professionals. And while there are many great real estate professionals out there without the REALTOR® designation, there are also some greater risks that come with working with someone who is not a designated REALTOR® with a commitment to the NAR Code of Ethics.
