The Village of New Paltz, NY, in southeastern Ulster County is known for its rich, living history, dedication to higher education, breathtaking views, award-winning food and eclectic arts and culture. Throughout the centuries, the region’s abundant resources, natural beauty and proximity to New York City have made the Village a vital community for residents, weekenders and students.
In 1677, a group of 12 Huguenots purchased from the Esopus nearly 40,000 acres of land, which came to be known as the New Paltz Patent. For more than 200 years, by special action of the New York State legislature, the community was governed by ‘the Duzine,’ referring to the original dozen partners who acquired the royal patent. Following the secession of the Town of Lloyd and parts of Shawangunk, Esopus and Gardiner, the Village of New Paltz was incorporated in 1887. Standing to this day in the Huguenot Street Historic District are the stately stone houses and community buildings constructed by the founding families.
Nearby, along the Village’s buzzing, walkable Main Street are a variety of restaurants, bars/breweries, shops and galleries. On the hill above is the vibrant academic and arts community of SUNY New Paltz. And mere minutes outside the commercial center are the Village’s golf courses and organic farms, the world-renowned hiking trails, swimming holes and climbing mountains of Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park, and the 12 wineries that comprise the Shawangunk Wine Trail.
In 2004, New Paltz was thrust into the national spotlight when a decision by then-Mayor Jason West made the politically active Ulster County village one of only two locations nationwide to marry same-sex couples.
