Formed from the Town of New Paltz, NY, in 1845, the Town of Lloyd, home to the Hamlet of Highland, is linked by the Mid-Hudson Bridge to Poughkeepsie, a city in Dutchess County, NY, on the other side of the Hudson River.
Lloyd’s highest point, Illinois Mountain, attracts bikers, hikers and nature lovers who traverse the Mountain’s meandering trails through an oak and hickory forest freckled with natural reservoirs and wetlands. The former Central New England Railway rail bed has been transformed into the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in the Town’s Hamlet of Highland; it connects Walkway over the Hudson State Park, the original Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge and Tony Williams Park, a public recreation area with basketball and tennis courts, a playground and picnic pavilions.
DID YOU KNOW?
Lloyd, NY, was first settled in 1754, when Anthony Yelverton brought equipment for a sawmill across the Hudson River. Yelverton settled on the riverfront, and added a brickyard and then a store on the lower level of his house. This area became the community’s first business district, now known as the Hamlet of Highland Landing.
