The historic Town of Hurley, NY, is located west of the City of Kingston in the northeast part of Ulster County. Two hours from New York City and one hour from Albany, the Town is nestled between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. Esopus Creek, a tributary of the Hudson River, flows through town, and the Ashokan Reservoir comprises part of the Town’s northern section. In 1982, parts of the Town were featured in the major motion picture Tootsie.
Originally the site of an Esopus Indian community, the area now known as Hurley was settled by the Dutch in 1662; after being destroyed during the Esopus Wars, it was resettled and renamed by the English in 1669. The Town is made up of 11 hamlets, including West Hurley and Old Hurley, which temporarily served as the capital of the State of New York.
Today, Old Hurley’s Main Street is part of the National Register of Historic Sites due to its stretch of stone houses well preserved as residences for more than 300 years. Some of these homes are open to the public once a year in July on Stone House Day, and one has been converted to a museum.
The Stone Hurley home of famed fashion designer Ryan Roche, circa 1688, was featured in VOGUE in 2015. Roche and her family have lived there since 2008, when they moved to town from New York City. She and her husband Garrett, now COO of Ryan Roche–a high-end contractor by trade, also recently restored the barn on the property, which serves as the couturier’s studio upstate
