Gardiner

Created in 1853 from parts of New Paltz, Rochester and Shawangunk, the Town of Gardiner, NY, is located amidst the Appalachian Mountains in the south-central part of Ulster County and split down its center by the Wallkill River. The Town is divided into 10 hamlets.

Gardiner is home to the oldest working farm in New York State, the Phillies Bridge Farm Project, as well as parts of Minnewaska State Park and the State’s largest visitor- and member-supported nature preserve, Mohonk Preserve. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail also begins in the southern part of town.

For art enthusiasts, the Gardiner Open Studio Tour allows the public to “experience a rare glimpse of artists in their studios.” Featuring 25 painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed-media artists and other local creatives, the Tour is offered for two days every June. The artists themselves sell their works locally all year round.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tuthilltown Spirits in Gardiner is the first whiskey distillery in New York State since Prohibition. For 220 years, the Tuthilltown Gristmill — now a National Historic Place — leveraged water power to turn local grains to flour. In 2003, Ralph Erenzo and Brian Lee established Tuthilltown Spirits LLC, and converted one of Tuthilltown’s mill granaries into a micro-distillery. Two and a half years later, Tuthilltown Spirits produced its first batch of vodka from scraps they collected at a local apple slicing plant. Today, the Gardiner distillery produces vodka from apples grown at orchards less than five miles away and uses grain harvested less than 10 miles away to create its highly awarded Hudson Whiskey
