The Marlborough area was first settled in 1697, after being designated a territory by the English three years earlier. In 1788, the Town was established.

English colonists named the Town of Marlborough after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs. During the Spanish Succession War in the early 1700s, Churchill led 10 consecutive successful campaigns, strengthening British arms to a level not known since the Middle Ages and ensuring his country’s prosperity throughout the century.
