The Village of Ellenville, NY, in the Town of Wawarsing, lies at the southern end of the Rondout Valley at the eastern base of the Catskill Mountains and the western base of the Shawangunk Ridge, listed by The Nature Conservancy as one of the ‘75 Last Great Places on Earth.’  

A part of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, Ellenville was a Colonial settlement along one of the first roads in America, “the Old Mine Road;” the former site of the Nevele, a popular Borscht Belt resort in the 1950s; an epicenter for the development of hang gliding in the 1970s and 1980s; and the fourth community featured on ABC’s television show, My Kind of Town, recorded and broadcast in 2005.

Today, Ellenville remains a popular destination for hang-gliding enthusiasts, with multiple hang-gliding schools, as well as two launch sites on the Shawangunk Ridge. The Nevele’s sister site, The Fallsview, is now the highly rated Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa. And the Village continues to attract visitors to its numerous well-manicured golf courses, historic sites and natural phenomena.

Legend has it that every pioneer wagon heading west through New York carried an Ellenville demijohn and, today, Ellenville pottery, glassworks and cutlery remain sought-after collector’s items, with some on display at the Ellenville Public Library’s Terwilliger House Museum.
